I have a possible solution for your first problem, maybe you just change
something in the pine config, but if this is the problem just remote the
file .pinecr in your home directory, and type pine and it will start as
the first time .... or just try with this

YourHost:~$chmod 700 $MAIL 

or

YourHost:~$chmod 700 /var/spool/mail/jonathan

because you have that as rw-rw and someone could read your e-mail and you
don't like that do you??????
