After two days and a sleepless night wrestling with RedHat 5.0 I finally got a working PPP setup. As the kernel debug messages revealed, the problem was indeed related to bad PPP packets, and had nothing to do with routing. When installing RH5.0, I had also upgraded the pppd to version 2.3.3 (ftp'ed from redhat-5.0/updates/i386/ppp-2.3.3-2.i386.rpm). According to some articles I found at comp.protocols.ppp, it happens that this version apparently has problems negotiating with CISCO routers (my ISP is probably using these). The error message was: > Feb 4 02:28:29 neutron kernel: ppp: frame with bad fcs, excess = b819 These frames were corrupted due to the wrong settings that were negotiated between ppp-2.3.3 and the router, causing frame checksum (fcs) errors. Including the directive "asyncmap 0" in /etc/ppp/options solved everything. As for the traceroute complaining about multiple interfaces and defaulting to eth0, I learned that I should use "traceroute -i ppp0". --- A.Tomita,Jr. atomita@example.com atomita@example.com --------------------------------------------------------------- Next Saturday Meeting: 14 February 1998 12:30 Tokyo Station Yaesu Chuo ticket gate. --------------------------------------------------------------- a word from the sponsor: TWICS - Japan's First Public-Access Internet System www.twics.com info@example.com Tel:03-3351-5977 Fax:03-3353-6096
