  What I'm talking about only affects the login screen itself.  You
can have your 'colour' there and still keep Netscrape happy with 
midnightblue after you log in and ~/.xsession is read.

  To tell the truth, I hadn't opened my copy during this whole 
discussion, but, yes, it is all there in Chapter 3, The X Display
Manager, which includes a couple of pages on customizing the login
window itself.  'man xdm' likewise appears to yield a wealth of
information.
