That's right.  It now uses a file called .xsession.  There is a
default .xsession somewhere on your system that is being used.
What you can do is copy your .xinitrc to .xsession and logout
and log back in.  You will see that everything is just as before.
As far as I know .xinitrc and .xsession are equivalent only 
that one is used if you type startx at a terminal and the
other is used when you log in through the X window log-in.

P.S. I was using Slackware as my main system until about 2 months
ago.
