-------------------------------------------------------- tlug note from Jim Schweizer <schweiz@example.com> -------------------------------------------------------- Hi all, In the last issue of Linux Gazette there was a review of Lyx a kind of word processor for Linux. Here's the beginning of the README: 'LyX is a modern approach of writing documents with a computer which breaks with the tradition of the obsolete typewriter concept. It is designed for people who wants a professional output with a minimum of time effort, without becoming specia- lists in typesetting. Compared to common word processors LyX will increase the productivity a lot, since most of the type- setting will be done by the computer, not the author.' This sounded pretty cool so I grabbed a copy of the LyX 0.10 BETA release and installed it. After getting all the config files in place and writing a shell script to export the proper lib path it's up and running. But, (there's always a 'but' with me, isn't there?) although I have Tex installed, I don't have Latex. No problem, I thought, I'll just go out, download a copy of Latex and I'll be up and printing in no time. So, I was off to CTAN where I found a bewildering array of Latex macros but nothing that said "I am Latex - take me." What am I looking for? Lyx looks like it has real potential, especially if you need to do a lot of equations or tables. There's a built-in math function as well as some of the standard word pro stuff like centering text, inserting footnotes and margin notes, and spell checkers etc. Does anyone know where to get a prebuilt LATEX macro package for Slackware? Many thanks, Jim S. ---------------------------------------------- Sent by: Jim Schweizer <schweiz@example.com> On: 27-Aug-97 at: 18:06:32 JST http://www1.harenet.or.jp/~schweiz/ Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana. ---------------------------------------------- Next TLUG meeting is Saturday October 11, 1997 ----------------------------------------------------------------- a word from the sponsor will appear below TWICS - Japan's First Public-Access Internet System. www.twics.com info@example.com Tel:03-3351-5977 Fax:03-3353-6096
