FWIW we have the opposite set up here on an old HP 715/50 and SPAR LX, both of 
which have a std SCSI2 (I assume) ports.    We added the wide ultra SCSI
devices at the end of the narrow devices (aka chain) so that they could 
be terminated properly (I think both required external termination).   No
problems in either case.
