I think its absolutely the best looking WM out there. Its modeled after the elegant NextStep OS. Though based on FVWM 1.24f, it has lots of added features. You really need at least X in 16 bit mode to appreciate it. One of the first things you'll notice, is that it uses lots of colours. Though you can shut off and reduce everything, on 16-bit displays, the NeXT style title bars are rendered in 128 colours to produce a subtle gradient effect. You can use one colour like other WM, if you prefer. Also, tiling with XPM is also possible. You are free to make it as tasteful or tasteless as you wish. There is a complete set of exellent looking icons that are heavily based on NeXT. A whole series of applets have been written to replace the ugly FVWM ones. These include NeXT-style calender/clock, MailBox, ModemMonitor, CD Player, etc. Also, AfterStep has a modified Tck/Tk that looks like NeXT. Also, xaw has the NeXT look. There is work on making it functional beyond Fvwm as well. Its likely there will be at least a partial rewrite in Obective-C in order to make use of code being developed by the GNUStep project. Here are some web pages: * http://www.inf.ufrgs.br/~kojima/nextaw/index.html From Alfredo Kojima's page: neXtaw is a replacement library for libXaw or libXaw3d. It is just a modified version of libXaw3d with some new features. It tries to emulate the look and feel of N*XTSTEP. * http://www.inf.ufrgs.br/~kojima/tkstep.html TkSTEP is a set of replacement files for the Tk library, that makes it's widgets look like NEXTSTEP's. It looks very good with the AfterStep window manager. * http://mango.sfasu.edu/~frank/afterstep/ Official AfterStep page. Has been down during the weekend, hopefully it'll be back up in a few days. This page is a must visit since it contains links to the FTP site (which is also temporary down). Here you will find a wealth of screen shots. * http://www.gnustep.org/ Official GNUstep homepage. * http://peanuts.leo.org/ns40/index-e.html Nextstep 4.0 screenshots. A lot of recent AfterStep cosmetic modifications have been based on these simulated screenshots. There are a lot more personal pages featuring AfterStep. There are also several mailing lists for AfterStep too. Hope these links give you an idea why AfterStep is my WM.
