  Hi,

  I am using "standard" Pine 3.91, too, right off the Slackware CDROM 
(Infomagic 4/96).  To get the "ISO-2022-JP" header to display when I
have Japanese in the text I changed the following line in .pinerc: 

# Reflects capabilities of the display you have. Default: US-ASCII.
# Typical alternatives include ISO-8859-x, (x is a number between 1 and 9).
character-set=iso-2022-jp

  As I mentioned earlier, even with this setting, the US-ASCII header
is still displayed when there's no Japanese text.

  And BTW, thanks for letting me know all my earlier text was in
New-JIS.  I'm glad to hear that.
