Regarding contacts - not only the contacts on the SD card itself, but the contacts within the reader can be oxidised.  I've had a few laptops with built-in SD readers that only worked after putting the card in and taking it out several times.  That movement can scrape off oxidation at the contact point enough that a better connection is made.  It's the same thing with old volume controls on stereos - by turning the knob back and forth several times, it can clean up scratchy-sounding volume controls.
