Well, you should definitely pull any important data off it using another
reader.
It's always worth trying a reformat with the officical [SD Card Association
formatting tool][formatting]. Embedded code (such as that in the Pi boot
ROMs) can be notoriously fussy about the particular way the card was
formatted.

I suggest first trying a [contact cleaner], and then a pencil eraser.
Sandpaper is likely to take off a little more metal than you would care
for.
