Even if it's unpaid, presumably before remote work kicked in, you'd have to at least enter Japan on a tourist (can you?) or maybe cultural activities visa. If it's not required, then it's both good and bad...good in that Matteo will have no problems; but bad in that the number of potential applicants would now skyrocket. I guess there are some things about remote work that people haven't yet worked out... Ray
