For Ubuntu folks there (was, since now deprecated?), something called " 
Ubuntu Tweak Janitor " ( http://ubuntu-tweak.com/ ).

I remember playing with that in the past but don't know the current 
state of things there now. It would solve your sudden space shortage. 
Just saying.
