An AP in repeater mode plugged somewhere midway (as suggested) should work, but if you buy new check what is their hardware and get at least the same maker.
Alternatively, get external antenna for your machine. If you are getting any signal (e.g. standing in the hallway or near the window with your current antenna(built-in), just adding a antenna might be the solution. Of course it depends what kind of hardware you have.
