Since RAM is cheap, and new laptops typically will hold plenty, I'd recommend choosing your primary working OS (hopefully Linux), and running the other OS as a virtual machine (ie. Oracle  VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, etc.).

Saves all that pesky rebooting.

Also, have you looked into wubi to see if that's compatible if you're using Ubuntu from a Windows 8 system? Seems by a quick google search it's supported.
