You'd better learn about packages first.
There are a lot more to learn and you have to try them
more quickly than, say, 10 years ago.
It holds the same whether you use deb, rpm or macports.

Actually, i think LFS isnt a bad way to learn linux, still today.
The knowledge of how linux works on these low levels gives you a lot
of leverage when debugging problems at higher levels.

I would say LFS, Gentoo or Arch would be one of the better ways to learn Linux. If you got with any of the "dumb it down for simple users" distributions, your install might be slightly faster but you will learn very little about Linux.
