I installed the latest Ubuntu a few weeks ago using ibus and 
thinks worked pretty much immediately.  There are one or two 
tools where I cannot type Japanese...but that might be the 
fault of the program (kate, kdevelop, etc. so far).

If it isn't working out for you, and you're going with an 
entirely new distribution, then try Ubuntu again but install 
in Japanese from the beginning...

PS:  I have English menus but Japanese input.
