Of course X?Emacs uses curses on terminals.  This Just Works[tm] if
you set terminal-coding-system to UTF-8.

I don't think that's relevant unless you have a widechar terminal.
Linux doesn't supply that by default.

In fact, your script works fine for me on Mac OS X.  What is going
wrong for you?
