I don't run it at all.  /path/to/dropbox-daemon does.

If I have to, I'll recompile said daemon until it says uncle (or maybe
something with one fewer letters).  So, yes, you have answered my main
question (how to anesthetize my PITA).

But ScottR answered the question, as a gloss on the one I proposed
above: GNOME sucks, and hates knowledgable users.  "Yuttori desktop",
anyone?

I really would like to know why that !@example.com in Cambridge who is
generally to be found at the end of a long delay line allows GNOME to
use the initial "G".  As ScottR points out, GNOME (and to a great
extent, all of f-d.o) is the antithesis of the ideals of GNU and free
software, despite the license.
