Re: [tlug] Ubuntu on just 256 MB?

I second puppy linux. I put it on my aunt's old Intel 900Mhz w/ 128 ram and it ran at a very reasonable speed. My only beef with it is that you're constantly logged in as root.

Swap? I installed netbook Ubuntu and it never asked for any swap
settings. Right now it's really slow, unusably so and it might very
well have to do with swap as the disk is constantly spinning. I was
able to get a terminal up and see that the load average was 5 while
the CPU usage was about 5% ...

Unfortunately I stopped the update manager half-way through and seem
to have ruined my installation.

If I read the Japanese spec page correctly this Vaio can only go up to 768 Mb.

I'd be nice to hear but gosh-darn-it ... the reason I'm trying to
install Linux is that her Windows is just god-awful slow ... I told
her I could install Linux and it would be nice and speedy. Now it's
even worse than her Windows XP was. I'd hate to come away from this
thinking that Windows is actually better in some cases.

There's gotta a be a Linux version I can give her to replace XP that
runs well on low memory. There just has to be :)
