Difinitely put some more RAM, according to the specs max is 768MB, so
get PC2700 512MB DDR 172pin MicroDIMM (not SO-DIMM!)

According to kakaku.com it will set you back about 4,000-6,000 yen and
will make everything run a lot better.

Still, go for light distros. I use WindowMaker as window manager on
PetiumM 1.0Ghz/768MB and it is OK for surfing (Gentoo here, compiled
on another Core i7/12GB machine).
