What happens is this, IIRC: when you originate a thread, that message
goes into sent mail, which is equivalent to being automatically
archived, and you won't see it again unless you look in sent mail *or*
someone replies to it.

If you reply to a thread, and do not archive the "conversation", as
Google likes to call it, then you'll see it in the conversation as
usual.  So in the end it depends (1) whether you're the kind who
starts new threads (you'll "lose" those posts to your sent mail), and
(2) whether you tend to archive conversations or keep them around for
a while.
