Anyway... I'd check with the Japanese consulate *before* coming to Japan.
It's probably a lot easier to get the right kind of visa up-front than to
arrive as a tourist and try to change your status later.

This is a very good idea.

If you can get your visa before you leave, you will also find that you are more likely to get three years (rather than one year) which will save you a lot of headache and irritation down the line.
