If the Japanese model supports 4GB cards then the hardware (SDHC) to read
cards of up to 32GB is there and the limitation is purely in software.

They may be doing it deliberately in order to make future models more
attractive to purchasers, or it could simply be bad planning that will be
corrected in future firmware updates. Only the manufacturer knows for sure.
