It's the AR5007EG card, which lspci will either show as AR242x or
AR5006EG.  (That's for the 700 group, the 901, I *think* was the first
to use a Realtek wireless.)

Fedora's version of NM with its live CD (Fedora 10) was also unable to
connect to encrypted networks.  (It might have been wpa rather than
NetworkMangler itself, I don't remember if I also tried from command
line.)  At any rate, once installed, an upgrade quickly fixed it. Is it
possible that it's the same with SuSE, this problem might simply be with
the version of NM or wpa_supplicant supplied with the installation CD?

#!Crunchbang Linux comes with openbox as its default, and has an eee
version.  It should support your wireless (it has both the ath5k module
for that card and support for the Realteks.)

I call it an ArchLinux for busy people, which isn't quite correct, but
means it's a relatively small installation, pretty easy to customize,
but has X and sound working out of the box. 

It's pretty much a one man show right now, but already has an
enthusiastic forum.
