The most annoying thing about this is the fact that French consumer
protection laws (Article L122-1 of the "Code de la Consommation") is
absolutely unambiguous about this, and yet retailers ignore it totally.

Another thing they don't seem to care about is the fact that hardware and
software don't go into the same columns of an accounting sheet, so how do
you divide the price correctly if you don't have the detail of what is being
spent on the computer itself and how much on the pre-installed software?
Retailers don't give the detail on the whole because that would make it easy
for people to say "just give me the machine with no software".

I'm glad you're getting somewhere with this. I remember reading about you
when I was still involved with the LUG Touraine (I was one of the founding
members).

What happened to the action that was being led by the DGCCRF, where they
were asking people to get written proof from retailers that they were
refusing to sell harware without software or even to give the detail of
hardware and software on the bill/pro-forma?
