The most annoying thing about this is the fact that French consumer protection laws (Article L122-1 of the "Code de la Consommation") is absolutely unambiguous about this, and yet retailers ignore it totally. Another thing they don't seem to care about is the fact that hardware and software don't go into the same columns of an accounting sheet, so how do you divide the price correctly if you don't have the detail of what is being spent on the computer itself and how much on the pre-installed software? Retailers don't give the detail on the whole because that would make it easy for people to say "just give me the machine with no software". > Readers of slashdot might have heard of our recent success in France. I remember reading about you when I was still involved with the LUG Touraine (I was one of the founding members). What happened to the action that was being led by the DGCCRF, where they were asking people to get written proof from retailers that they were refusing to sell harware without software or even to give the detail of hardware and software on the bill/pro-forma? -- G.
