I would think that compact code, as long as it is well-factored, would
be easier to maintain than less compact code. Why do you think it
would be harder?
By "compact", I mean short, generic and sometimes hackerish. 
For smart and experience programmers, such code is not a matter but
average coders will find it hard to maintain.
