Kopetealso kde-based so wants to deploy 86mb of data here on this window-
maker based system..

Pidgin shows avatars fine for me talking jabber with a jabberd2 
running on works intranet.

We found the psi-client quite usable ( psi-im.org ), can also handle
avatars. Its jabber-only, so you have to look into transports to connect
to icq/msn networks to use those.
