So its a networkprinter.
Yes. That is correct. I have three machines using it.
VirtualBox comes with its own network drivers, so I am able to access my LAN and WAN without problem.
..and the vm can access networkservices offered on the lan, ok.
Yes. This is what has been happening for the past several days, so I thought it would be nice to take things to the next level.
You could check from the lan if you can establish a tcp-connection to
port 515 on the networkprinter using 'telnet ip 515',
The same command should work from the XP home, and you should be able to setup a network-printer on the XP home much as you would do on a XP home on a standalone computer.
Okay ... the two tests worked fine. I could address the printer from the LAN and WIN-XP.
I installed the WIN edition of the driver within VirtualBox. When I did a test print from "駅すぱあと”, I kept getting a message that there was "a problem with the print spooler" that was otherwise undefined. After playing around with "プリンタとFAX設定" in the WIN box, it appeared as though I'd screwed up something in the scanner / image portion of the program -- which are services I can get in Kubuntu and really don't need, but I couldn't have the printer driver without accepting all of the "features" (sic).
I ended up uninstalling.
I have reinstalled, using a version of the driver and services program I downloaded from HP's web site that appears to be newer (most key files are six months ~ one year newer). The installation CD started insisting that there were files missing and it would stop installation. The downloaded version went on in one try. However, attempting to repeat the same test with the same program results in a "Print failed" message with no further explanation.
I am wondering if I might be creating some sort of conflict between the WIN and Kubuntu sides of the box as I am using two different drivers from the same machine to drive the same printer. Is there anywhere I can collect more information from this output that might tell me more?
