Almost certainly, the case is:
1. The modem does no PPPoE, DHCP, web or anything else. It merely
converts Ethernet packets to a format that can run over the telephone
cable; a DSLAM on the other end will convert them back and pass them on.
2. You can to set up your machine to do a PPPoE connection; this will
authenticate you to your provider's system at the remote end of the
ethernet-modem-DSLAM connection. You will not need DHCP or anything
else; the address is set up via PPPoE.
3. If you decide to use a router instead, the router will do the PPPoE
connection in the exact same way as your computer would, and will act as
a NAT (firewall) device. Then you just use ordinary Ethernet and DHCP on
your computer, connected to the inside interface of the router.
