Yes. The router should be passing the username/password to the ISP,
not the computer. That way if she adds other machines or perhaps a
wireless AP, the router does the DHCP and authentication.

Linux end of things?
All you need is the username and password that the ISP should have
provided. There should be a PPPoE interface on either the modem or a
router. If she does not want to buy a router, Ubuntu can handle the
authentication:
