I have only had one SATA Controller[1] that didn't work with the install cd drivers, and required a vendor supplied driver. Apart from that SATA is pretty mature. The libata site has a list of hardware and there level of support. I am currently running with an on board nVidia CK804 Serial ATA Controller[1] which was recognized by the gentoo install cd.
