Hi,
I hosed my boot sector not so long ago and I think (but don't remember
exactly, sorry) that I run into a similar problem. I chrooted to the
linux partition and played with grub from there.
One important thing to check when you are inside the chroot is that
you can see your hard disk /dev/hda, if you can't it means you forgot
to mount devfs inside the chroot.
