Some component of grub is probably corrupted.  What I would do is use
Knoppix to chroot into Debian Sarge then *reinstall the grub package
from Debian*, then try installing grub with grub-install hda.  You
should backup the partition first because reinstalling the grub package
could cause further file system corruption.
