I've been very busy (preparing to go on sabbatical in less than a
month), but I and others in the Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) have
managed to track down a bit of information. In particular, the
Japanese JTC1/SC34 committee is currently proposing to vote "NO WITH
COMMENTS" on DIS 29500. They have explicitly stated that they are
prepared to change to YES if their concerns are met, and they are
prepared to discuss changing their vote up until the voting deadline
at ISO.

The TLUG members are discussing preparing a brief to send to SC34 to
encourage them to hold firm on their NO vote. They will meet again on
Sept 11 according to the schedule at

http://www.y-adagio.com/public/committees/wg8_jap/discussion/2007/sc34dis07.htm

However, I'm unsure whether they sometimes have unscheduled meetings
or something; I didn't expect the meeting on 07/20 based on other
information I had seen.
