As always, thanks Scott.

This worked for me in Ubuntu.

First I installed Japanese language support.

Then, after installing scim, I added the following to my $HOME/.bashrc

export XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM"
export LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8

So far, no luck. I do have the Japanese locale installed, and I also commented out the settings that I had made in my ~.i18r and X11/scim files. I'll keep digging around--this shouldn't be an unresolvable problem. One question, though. When you wrote this line


> export XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM"

you probably mis-typed and used single quotes on one side and double on the other. Obviously it has to be matched, but does it matter which one I use?
