Re: [tlug] Desktop Wars Query

I use gnome: when I started using linux as my main desktop machine
(5-ish years ago?) it seemed roughly the same as KDE, but I got on
slightly better with it and gnome seemed to be getting more developer
attention.

My biggest pet hate is the opaqueness of how file association works.
When I right-click some files and choose open with the same program name
appears two or three times, and some file extensions (like "*.inc" the
one I use for most PHP stuff) get badly auto-detected: "the filename
indicates that this file is of type "inc document" but the contents of
this file indicate it is of type "PHP script". ... security risk". I
therefore have to always right click and choose the editor. I've tried
many times but just cannot track down what configuration file is
controlling this, or even where "inc document" is being defined (or
needs to be defined??). The files under .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf,
.gconfd, and .gnome2_private seem like they might all be involved - it
is a big mess.

If anyone has seen a good how-to on this subject please let me know!

I stick with gnome on the assumption that all popular choices must stink
equally.

I like the way I can fairly easily add icon shortcuts at the top of the
desktop, and I cannot live without my four virtual desktops. I also like
that the digital clock shows seconds, and that I can use the mouse thumb
wheel on the speaker icon to alter volume (very quick and easy for when
the phone rings).
