Is anybody out there fairly familiar with gdm running under Ubuntu?

Not me.... I hate the thing...

Ooo. Can we start a club?

in all cases I keep running into situations where gdm won't give
me a login window.

but, you could always disable it (rcsomething.d), log in at the command prompt and fire it up manually....

(Yah, I get that you want to avoid work arounds, but hey...)

Well, given the whole XDMCP concept, I can't see exactly how that would work. But I'm open to advice on that.

I'm not concerned as much about avoiding work-arounds as just, "make it
stuff work like logging in on the console" when I'm actually somwhere
I'm across a network.

Actually, I probably have some sort of grand vision here, too, but I've
not quite worked out what it is....
