in all cases I keep running into situations where gdm won't give me a login window.
but, you could always disable it (rcsomething.d), log in at the command prompt and fire it up manually....
(Yah, I get that you want to avoid work arounds, but hey...)
Well, given the whole XDMCP concept, I can't see exactly how that would work. But I'm open to advice on that.
I'm not concerned as much about avoiding work-arounds as just, "make it stuff work like logging in on the console" when I'm actually somwhere I'm across a network.
Actually, I probably have some sort of grand vision here, too, but I've not quite worked out what it is....
