Actually, it's *Apache* that was unwilling to operate with the option
+FollowSymLinks. PHPMyAdmin couldn't care less either way (it actually
runs from a symlinked directory here - server not exposed to the 'Net).

+FollowSymLinks in a .htaccess file will only be permitted if the
appropriate overrides[1] are declared in the global httpd.conf file for
the directory in which the incriminating .htaccess resides (or a parent
thereof). Evidently, those overrides are *not* declared in httpd.conf
(none are declared by default), so Apache was barfing on the option.
