IMHO, for the rest of us, it is a waste of effort. (Though, out of habit, I still usually do; and with modern large disks I just guess high on the /var requirements.)
It *may* be a "waste of effort" for desktop users. However playing with and learning the reasons why you might want to use various partition schemes is a good way to start thinking about how to administer a server.
