Just wanted to say thank you for your responses and help on this.

As you may have seen in my other threads about losing my Nvidia drivers, 
I feel like I've learned that installing another kernel for 
experimenting with is not as easy as it first seemed. At least not for 
someone at my level of Linux.

So I'm going to back down from this endeavor for now, and just stay 
within my currently nicely working 2.6.17 kernel.

But I still appreciate the advice and comments you offered.
