I don't see how that is terribly relevant.

TLUG auctions are a way to refill the coffers, hundreds of yen at a
time. That money is then used for things like registering domains,
buying hardware for our server when necessary, and other miscellaneous
expenses.

Since one TLUGger had a piece of hardware that he wanted to offload,
you offered him 500 yen for it, and then he said that you could have
it for free, someone simply suggested that you donate the 500 yen to
TLUG, since Lyle didn't want it. We are not charging you for
membership, nor are we weighing the worth of your contributions
against 500 yen.
