Shell and vi/emacs/whatever_editor are (IMHO) easier.
I actually find using SQL to search through data a much nicer experience :-)
As for management backing up, replicating, restoring and so a database such as MySQL is pretty easy...
I will lend a hand to the group on this front if the current admin needs me to.
