[tlug] RE: Tlug Digest, Vol 11, Issue 27

Good Morning,

This is what I use. These cards worked great on Ubuntu after installing
the Wifi pack from Automatix2 (www.getautomatix.com).

I know this distro that is on the link is really lame, but it serves as
a great guide.

Hi all,

I bought the new book from O'Reilly Japan titles "Binary Hack".
It's mostly ELF-centric and thus good for Linux.
http://0xcc.net/binhacks/eabout.html

Although I've already enjoyed a lot the book, 90% of the book is
unclear to me :(
And TLUG is the best Japanese/English Linux community, anyone
interested in joining me to
read it and maybe translate this great Japanese book into English?

I've recently been trying and buying wireless cards so I'll share what
I've (re)learned.

Just last week I purchased a corega CG-WLCB54GL2 and a linksys
WPC54G-JPV5. The corega has the ralink chipset in it and has a linux
driver released by the chip manufacturer.. that's nice but there's a
bug in the driver that prevents "carefree use"... The linksys,
unfortunately has no native linux support and I have to rely on the
windows driver and ndiswrapper ... it's functional but I'm not really
happy about using the windows driver.

I would probably suggest a card that uses the prism chipset as it's
been around the longest and seems to have the best support. Make sure
you know what chip is in the card and if it has linux support before
you buy it. Often trying to buy a cheap wifi card can get you an
expensive paperweight.

Also, there's quite a few pages up listing chipsets, driver
availability, and the interface of your choice.. like this one..
googling for linux wifi should get you the info you need (or just
click this link )

Sounds cool! It's only available in Japanese? That's
interesting.
It's usually the other way around.

Either way, I'd be happy to try helping translating a few hacks.
My vocabulary on linkers and binary formats needs some brushing up in
Japanese anyways.

I'll throw in my positive experience with the Intel IPW2200 driver,
which--according to its project page[1]--supports "Intel PRO/Wireless
2915ABG Network Connection and Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network
Connection mini PCI adapters".

This page also looks pretty wonderful:

Count me in on the translation effort as well. This sounds like a
great TLUG project!

I know a Hacks editor from O'Reilly in the US--the guy I worked with
on "Retro Gaming Hacks". Should I contact him to offer our services on
the translation, or would it be best to go through O'Reilly in Japan?

Last time I checked they didn't provide static addresses. It was
something they had planned to offer but I do not know if they have
implemented it yet.

I use no-ip.com and they offer a daemon which updates their DNS when the

dynamic IP is changed. The daemon source code is readily available and I

think it's even in some packaging systems (confirmed in gentoo's
portage).
