But there are other alternatives for rendering x windows stuff on m$

My experience with VNC was anything but pleasent.
Here's my set-up. The server end is a very old AMD K-6 350Mhz with 128MB
RAM I keep around for trying things out. Currently it runs KDE on MEPIS 6.
Yes, I know a machine this old has no right running KDE but it does and
just fast enough to be tolerable. I used KDE's built in Desktop Sharing
server "krfb" as the VNC server. The client end was my wife's WinXP recent
model Dell notebook running the TightVNC client. The result: the server
ground to a near halt. There was an enourmous time lag between clicks and
any change in the window of the VNC client. Un-useable. No doubt the
"krfb" server was partly to blame.
After this I discovered Xming. Set up the MEPIS box ssh server to allow
X11 forwarding, installed Xming & PuTTY on the WinXP end and hey presto, I
can now access my linux apps from Xming. What's more they load just as
fast as they do when I'm sitting at the MEPIS box. A day and night
difference when compared to VNC.
X forwarding may be old technology but it's seems to require far fewer
resources than VNC does.
