This is getting more and more serious consideration :-).

I found I had the "extras" repository disabled in yum. That explains it,
thought I. Now I'll be able to post here that installing a media player
is just as simple on fedora as on debian et al ("yum install totem-xine").

114MB of updates, and a reboot, later I'm back to it dying on udev. FC4
repair disk, delete the problem udev/rules.d file that just keeps coming
back, reboot, reboot again, and we're up. Now even DVDs don't play. "yum
install xine-lib-extras-nonfree", and I'm back to where I started: DVDs
and wmv play, avi's crash xine.

Grrr... I give up. Got to get work done.
