Have a look at XQT, that will allow you to run many X apps from within
Qtopia.

There is a guy called meanie on the previously mentioned
http://www.oesf.org/forums/ who put together a nice image of some of the
most requested X apps and the necessary libs etc to run them (come to
about 100Mb or so from memory) and you can just start the programs from
the regular qtopia icons. He even has a package for openoffice.org and gimp!
