I haven't actually tried to dual-boot, tho I did try OZ for a bit
(couldn't live without handwriting recognition and the dictionary, so
I converted back); my C750 died so the host I planned to experiment
with is no longer available. I'm due for an upgrade on the C3100
though so...

The Sharp ROM *is* a Linux distribution. There's your proof of
concept.
I can't imagine that the hardware is going to be at risk. What the
Sharp ROM gives you that the all-OSS systems don't is (1) Qtopia,
which is a version of Qt that drives the hardware more or less
directly rather than running on top of X, and (2) assorted proprietary
applications (specifically handwriting recognition).
