The Sharp ROM *is* a Linux distribution. There's your proof of concept. I can't imagine that the hardware is going to be at risk. What the Sharp ROM gives you that the all-OSS systems don't is (1) Qtopia, which is a version of Qt that drives the hardware more or less directly rather than running on top of X, and (2) assorted proprietary applications (specifically handwriting recognition).
