Well, after playing around with a live Fedora CD and a live KateOS CD,
both of which use xorg-7.1.1, I found that I can start X. The bad part
is that regardless of card, I have to use the vesa driver, and I can't
get a resolution of better than 800x600, even if my list of modes only
gives 1024x768.
For anyone still interested, here's a working xorgconfig from KateOS
http://www.scottro.net/vesaxorg.conf
Thanks to Jim, Joe and Attila for their input.
