In the SDL is not just for C++ geeks category:
There was recently a PyWeek[1] programming challenge[2] using Pygame 
[3], a Python library built atop SDL.  You can download the  
submissions, including this one[4] which seems a fairly gentle  
introduction to drawing with Pygame.
