In the meantime, is there no way I can blow away MySQL and PHP and just 
start from scratch?

The thing is that the working configuration was the default 
configuration when Ubuntu first installed. So if I could just get back 
to square one, I think I'd be in business.

But every time I try "apt-get remove", or "Completely Uninstall" in 
Synaptic, and then reinstall, it seems to have kept my most recent, 
flawed, configuration files.

Is there a reliable way to wipe the applications clean off my hard 
drive, then re-install fresh copies without fear of past settings lingering?
